Osteopathic Philosophy

Four Founding Principles

Osteopathy has four founding principles that practitioners adhere to during each treatment.

I

The body is a unit

A person is a complete unit of body, mind, and spirit. No single part or system of the body functions completely independently. An injury, restriction, or strain in one area (such as the foot) will inevitably create compensatory adjustments and affect mechanical function elsewhere (such as the hip or lower back).

II

Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated

The physical structure of the body governs how well it functions, and vice versa. If a bone, joint, organ, or muscle is structurally restricted or misaligned, it will directly impair the function of that tissue or surrounding systems, such as restricting blood flow, nerve conduction, or lymphatic drainage.

III

The body possesses self-healing mechanisms

The human body has its own inherent capacity to defend, repair, and heal itself. Osteopathy views the body as a self-regulating pharmacy. The role of the manual practitioner is not to “cure” the patient, but rather to remove structural roadblocks so that the body’s natural healing abilities can function optimally.

IV

Rational treatment is based on these principles

Effective therapy must combine all three prior rules. Medical or manual treatments are only considered rational when they respect the body’s unity, address the relationship between structure and function, and focus on supporting the body’s natural capacity for self-healing rather than merely suppressing symptoms.

Treatment Modalities

Five Categories of Manual Technique

Therapists treat patients using five primary categories of manual techniques.

01

Osteo-articular Adjustments

Gentle, low-velocity mobilization of the joints to reduce pressure, ease restriction, and increase range of motion.

02

Myofascial Release

Stretching and manipulating the connective tissues (fascia) surrounding muscles to relieve deep structural tension.

03

Visceral Manipulation

Delicate, targeted manual pressure applied to the internal organs and their surrounding tissues to improve blood flow and organic function (often used for respiratory or digestive problems).

04

Craniosacral Therapy

Highly subtle pressure applied to the bones of the skull, spine, and sacrum to regulate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and balance the central nervous system.

05

Muscle Energy Techniques

A cooperative contract-and-relax style stretching where the patient gently resists the therapist’s force to safely lengthen short or tight muscles.

Treatments may also include craniosacral therapy, vagus nerve therapy and red light therapy, applied when indicated during your appointment.
